Official Opposition Camp Head and CHADEMA Chairman, Freeman Mbowe.
The Official Opposition Camp
Leader, Mr Freeman Aikaeli Mbowe wanted to know from the Prime Minister
in a session of ‘Questions to the PM’ this morning, why the government
decided to ban Mwana Halisi while in recent days (government) has been
using court in all cases about it.
Mbowe asked if the government
does not know that it shows the signs of bad governance for passing
judgment about Mwana Halisi without involving the important governmental
pillar, Judiciary.
“Hon Prime Minister, don’t you
think that the government shows a bad sign to the growth of good
governance in the country after banning Mwana Halisi?” asked Mbowe
Responding to the question,
Prime Minister said the government uses Newspaper Act of 1976 because it
is the only law which supervises print media industry and is still in
use up to now.
“We use it because it was approved by this Assembly and is still in use. I think the decision taken was right.”
For a long time media
stakeholders have been criticizing the government for embracing the laws
such as Newspaper Act of 1976 (investing much power to the Minister)
which hinder media freedom especially to investigative stories in the
country.
